NORTH MAIN STREET IMPROVEMENTS
SUFFOLK, VA
| |
A DIFFICULT PROJECT FROM A LOGISTICAL STANDPOINT; TRAFFIC HAD TO BE MAINTAINED AT SUFFOLK’S BUSIEST INTERSECTION WHILE SAFETY COULD NOT BE COMPROMISED. THE PROJECT WENT CONSIDERABLY OVER BUDGET AT BID TIME AND DOREY ELECTRIC (AS LOW RESPONSIVE BIDDER) WORKED WITH THE OWNER (THE CITY OF SUFFOLK) TO VALUE-ENGINEER THE PROJECT TO HELP GET THE NUMBERS IN BUDGET. THE SAFETY OF THE WORKERS, THE PEDESTRIANS AND VEHICLE OPERATORS WERE DOREY’S PRIMARY CONCERN. ADDING ON TO, AND RE-HABILITATING A SEWER SYSTEM FROM THE 19TH CENTURY POSED A PARTICULAR CHALLENGE. UNFORESEEN UNDERGROUND OBSTRUCTIONS APPEARED ALMOST DAILY BUT THE CITY OF SUFFOLK, SHERRY EARLY, AND THEIR CAPABLE STAFF WORKED WELL WITH DOREY TO MITIGATE DOWN-TIME AND ANSWER QUESTIONS IN A TIMELY FASHION. THE ROADWAY IMPROVEMENTS INCLUDED ASPHALT, CONCRETE, LANDSCAPING, SANITARY SEWER, WATER, DUCT BANK AND CONCRETE PAVERS. THE PROJECT INVOLVED 524 SQ YARDS OF MILLING AND 564 TONS OF OVERLAY TO THE EXISTING ROADWAY, INSTALLING APPROXIMATELY 800 FT OF NEW WATER MAIN, REHABILITATING APPROXIMATELY 1,600 FT OF EXISTING SANITARY SEWER SYSTEM, TRAFFIC SIGNAL WORK AND CONSTRUCTION OF HUNDREDS OF FEET OF 12 WAY 6” AND 4” ELECTRICAL DUCT BANK FOR DOMINION VIRGINIA POWER, VERIZON AND COX COMMUNICATIONS. |
